Gillian Anderson On ‘X-Files’ Future, Playing Margaret Thatcher & When U.S. Will See First Female President – Golden Globes Backstage

Congratulations to Gillian on her second Golden Globe win!!

Tonight Gillian Anderson took home her second Golden Globe for playing late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. Anderson’s first win was for The X- Files in 1997. However the likelihood of the actress reprising Thatcher in the near future is higher than returning as Dana Scully; the paranormal investigator she’s built a career on playing.

Asked whether there was more X-Files in her future, Anderson exclaimed, “Oh, gosh, No.”

Asked her thoughts when the U.S. will see its first female president, like UK broke glass ceilings before with Thatcher as the country’s first female prime minister, the actress answered “Hopefully within the next four years that will happen.”

“It’s interesting playing a character like Thatcher because she’s so divisive. People have opinions (of her) that don’t sit in the middle of the road,” said Anderson.

“To have a woman as President, hopefully it will be a clearer response to the impact of our getting our first woman vice president, and discussed for decades more in that regard,” said Anderson hoping that such a future leader isn’t as controversial as Thatcher.

One takeaway she loved about playing Thatcher: “Not only did she cook food for her cabinet members in the flat above No. 10 Downing Street, but the dish we see her cooking is comprised of leftovers. She’s serving family leftovers to her male cabinet members. I enjoyed that one.”

Gillian Anderson to Star Alongside Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer in Showtime’s ‘First Lady’

Another new project for Gillian!

Gillian Anderson is taking on another famous woman in history.

The Crown and Sex Education favorite has been tapped to star alongside Viola Davis and Michelle Pfeiffer in the Showtime drama The First Lady.

The anthology focuses on the personal and political lives of the country’s most enigmatic heroes, with season one focused on Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford (Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Davis). Anderson, who most recently portrayed Margaret Thatcher in Netflix’s The Crown, will portray Roosevelt.

“Gillian Anderson is an actress of incredible range and exquisite talent — she is the perfect choice to complete this powerhouse trio, who will inhabit the roles of these iconic women,” said Amy Israel, exec vp scripted at Showtime. “It’s inspiring to have Gillian, Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Susanne Bier and Cathy Schulman at the forefront of The First Lady. They have truly set the stage for a landmark Showtime series.”

Roosevelt served as the first lady of the U.S. from 1933-45, making her the longest serving first lady in history. She was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. Controversial for her outspokenness, particularly on civil rights, she was the first presidential spouse to hold regular press conferences, write a daily newspaper column and host a weekly radio show. She also pushed the United States to join and support the United Nations and became its first delegate.

Author Aaron Cooley (Four Seats: A Thriller of the Supreme Court) created the series and will write and exec produce alongside Davis and her husband/JuVee Productions partner Julius Tennon, Oscar winner Cathy Schulman and her Welle Entertainment banner (Crash), Jeff Gaspin (L.A.’s Finest) and Link Entertainment’s Brad Kaplan (Mr. Church). The series is a co-production between Showtime and Lionsgate Television. Andrew Wang and Susanne Bier, the latter of whom will direct, also exec produce.

Anderson joins a cast that also includes Judy Greer as Nancy Howe, Eckhart as President Gerald Ford, Jayme Lawson as young Michelle Obama, Kristine Forseth as young Betty Ford and Rhys Wakefield as vice president Dick Cheney.

‘Sex Education’ Season 2 Sets January Premiere Date at Netflix

A follow-up course in Sex Education has been added to Netflix’s winter curriculum: The streamer announced Monday that Season 2 of the acclaimed British comedy will drop all eight episodes on Friday, Jan. 17.

Netflix unveiled the premiere date along with the following mural, which features the show’s main characters: Otis (played by Asa Butterfield), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Maeve (Emma Mackey), Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling), Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood), Adam (Connor Swindells), Ola (Patricia Allison) and Lily (Tanya Reynolds).

Sex Education follows the aforementioned Otis, a socially awkward high schooler who lives with his sex therapist mother, Jean (Gillian Anderson). In Season 1, Otis and his friend Maeve set up a sex clinic at school to capitalize on his intuitive talent for sex advice.

When we pick up in Season 2, “late bloomer Otis must master his newly discovered sexual urges in order to progress with his girlfriend Ola, whilst also dealing with his now strained relationship with Maeve,” according to the official logline. “Meanwhile, Moordale Secondary is in the throes of a Chlamydia outbreak, highlighting the need for better sex education at the school, and new kids come to town who will challenge the status quo.”

Gillian Anderson among stars lined up for ‘unrehearsed’ play

Actors including Gillian Anderson, Joanna Lumley, Meera Syal, Jim Broadbent and Damian Lewis are to appear on stage in a murder mystery where their lines will be fed to them through an earpiece.

The Park Theatre in north London has revealed details of an eye-catching play in which one of the main characters will be played by a series of actors who have had no rehearsal, direction or access to the script.

Whodunnit (Unrehearsed) will feature a different guest performer each night. Other names so far are Catherine Tate, Juliet Stevenson, Maureen Lipman, Ruby Wax, Tim Vine, John Bishop, Clive Anderson, Simon Callow, Ronan Keating, Marcus Brigstocke and Gyles Brandreth.

After a two-week run in London in July, the concept will be repeated at the Edinburgh Fringe in August with more guest performers yet to be announced.

Gillian Anderson said the theatre, which gets no public subsidy, needed to raise more than £250,000 a year just to keep the doors open.

“The monies raised from this production’s higher ticket prices will support their core ambition to present accessible theatre over the coming years and to further their work with the local community,” she said. “A number of £10 day tickets will also be available. I do hope people will come and enjoy, and reap the benefit of supporting this fantastic cause.”

Audiences will not know in advance which guest actor they will see. Other actors in the company will have rehearsed the play, which will also feature the pre-recorded voices of Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Judi Dench.

Each guest actor will be fed their lines through an earpiece and will endeavour to solve the crime, set in an isolated manor, in real time.

Vine said he was looking forward to a “unique theatrical experience”. He said: “To be honest, I’m often on stage with no idea what I’m supposed to be doing and a strange voice in my head, so this ought to be a piece of cake.”

All the guest actors are giving their time gratis. The theatre’s artistic director, Jez Bond, said: “We’re very fortunate that the leading actors in our country understand the power and importance of smaller-scale theatres and the challenges they face.”

‘Sex Education’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Good news! The somewhat confusing British school with an American vibe & 70’s fashion aside, I actually quite enjoyed this series, so I’m happy to see it return for another season!

Netflix is bringing back awkward comedy series “Sex Education” starring Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield for a sophomore season.

The streamer announced the season 2 renewal Friday, with production on the eight-episode season slated to begin this spring in the U.K. According to Netflix, the series is among its most popular recent originals — on track to be viewed by more 40 million members worldwide within the first four weeks of season one’s Jan. 11 release.

“Sex Education” centers on 16-year-old Otis Milburn (Butterfield), an inexperienced, socially awkward high-school student who lives with his sex-therapist mother (Anderson). Otis is a reluctant expert on sex but comes to realize he can use his knowledge to gain status at Moordale High School, teaming up with bad-girl Maeve (Emma Mackey) to set up an underground sex-therapy clinic for fellow students.

In addition to Anderson, Butterfield an Mackey, “Sex Education” stars Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Tanya Reynolds, Patricia Allison and Alistair Petrie, who are set to reprise their roles. Creator Laurie Nunn will return for season 2 and executive producer with Jamie Campbell set to executive produce alongside Nunn. The U.K.’s Eleven will continue as the production company for the second season of the breakout series.

“The reception to season one has been so exciting,” Nunn said in a statement. “Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible. I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”

“Laurie Nunn has captured the awkward teenage experience with a lot of heart and humor in Sex Education,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content. “Along with the Eleven team and executive producer and director Ben Taylor, she’s created a universally relatable series that has resonated with our members around the world.”

“Sex Education” season one was created and written by Nunn and executive-produced by Eleven’s Jamie Campbell and Ben Taylor, and co-executive produced by Sian Robins-Grace. Taylor also served as a director on season one along with Kate Herron.

Gillian Anderson considered to play Margaret Thatcher in ‘The Crown’

The cast list for the next stage of The Crown is shaping up nicely, but the role of Margaret Thatcher is yet to be filled. Reports suggest, however, that the part of the former Prime Minister could go to Gillian Anderson, who even bears a resemblance to the Eighties power player.

The Mail reports that Anderson is being considered to join Olivia Colman, Ben Miles and Helena Bonham Carter for the third and fourth series of The Crown, which move the Netflix drama into the Seventies and Eighties.

Anderson is being considered in part, the paper says, because of her relationship with the show’s writer, Peter Morgan. Morgan, who also wrote The Queen, last worked with Anderson on The Last King of Scotland, which he wrote and she starred in. Neither Anderson nor Morgan responded to the rumours circling her casting in The Crown, although he did emphasis that their circumstances were different while making the 2006 film.

A source close to The Crown said: “Gillian is an excellent actress, so it would be a real coup to get her.”

Anderson, who recently turned 50, is best-known for her role as Agent Dana Scully on hit Nineties sci-fi series The X Files. However, the British-American actress has won acclaim in recent years for her performance in The Fall and, on stage, as Blanche DuBois in The Young Vic’s 2014 production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

The Crown is currently filming its third series, which is expected to focus on the breakdown of Princess Margaret’s marriage to her then-husband Lord Snowdon and introduce a young Camilla Parker Bowles, whom Prince Charles met at a polo match in 1971.

Thatcher isn’t expected to appear in The Crown until the end of the fourth series, as the newly elected leader of the Conservative Party.

Anderson’s representatives have said they “don’t ever comment on speculative casting”.

‘UFO’ Trailer & Release Date!

The trailer for UFO was released several days ago, and it looks like the movie shall (finally) be released on September 4, 2018! More information about the movie itself is posted below, courtsey of SyFy Wire. View the official trailer under the cut!

To celebrate World UFO Day today, we have an exclusive trailer of the movie (yep, you guessed it) UFO, an intriguing sci-fi thriller starring Gillian Anderson, Alex Sharp, and David Strathairn, which will debut on digital and DVD Sept. 4.

Just like those observing this day in search of unidentified flying objects, the movie sets to uncover mysteries of the universe after a young student named Derek (played by Tony-winning actor Alex Sharp) investigates what he believes to be a series of extraterrestrial sightings on earth.

Helped by his advanced mathematics professor Dr. Hendricks (played by X-Files’ Anderson) and girlfriend Natalie (played by Ella Purnell) Derek races after these supposed UFO sightings with FBI special agent Franklin Ahls (played by David Strathairn) hot on his heels.

It’s billed as an edge-of-your-seat thriller, and judging by the trailer it looks like a fun ride, as well as diving deep into UFO mythology — particularly with Anderson’s character on hand to do the math.

Production on the movie began way back in December 2016 in Cincinnati, and it appears as though the project took a little while to find its way to distribution. Still, what better day to drop the trailer than today.
