Squadron 42 has been a long time coming. The single-player campaign living inside of the Star Citizen MMO universe has benefitted from the game’s unbelievable crowdfunded budget of around $195 million, bringing to life one of the best video game casts of all time in one of the first trailers to really show off its character work.
The multiplayer side of the game, which is currently in version Alpha 3.2, is out. But the forthcoming Squadron 42 is tantalizingly star-studded, having captured the voices and likenesses of such heavy-hitters as Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Ben Mendelsohn, John Rhys-Davies, and Gillian Anderson.
That covers Star Wars, Game of Thrones, The X-Files, Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings, Kingsman, and Harry Potter, in case you were keeping score. Even if the gameplay ends up being terrible — which there’s no indication that it will — it’ll be worth playing the game just to see the full performances teased in its full CitizenCon trailer.
Scary buggy aliens, long flowing coats, plenty of spaceship comm secrecy, and being Mark Hamill’s wingman. OK, we’re on board to join the United Empire of Earth — especially if that means being roused by a stirring Oldman speech before hopping in the cockpit for some good ol’-fashioned aerial combat.
The motion capture in this game looks incredible, even if these characters haven’t spoken to each other yet. But perhaps in the full version of Squadron 42 (whenever it comes out), nerds’ fan fictions will be fulfilled.
